Who can witness my deed poll?
This article provides information on why a witness is required when executing a deed of change of name and gives examples of suitable people to act as your witness.
Why is a witness needed?
When you execute (sign) your deed poll you are making a legal declaration that you are formerly abandoning your old name and will take and use your new name exclusively from then on. By signing your deed poll the witness is confirming that they personally saw you execute the document and that your signature is authentic.
Witness requirements
The person witnessing your deed poll must:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be independent (not a partner or relative)
- Live at a different address to you
- Be able to understand English
- Watch you sign and date your deed poll
Examples of suitable witnesses
The following people will usually be suitable to witness your deed poll:
- A neighbour
- A work colleague
- A family friend
Examples of unsuitable witnesses
The following people are not suitable to witness your deed poll:
- Your husband, wife or partner
- A sibling
- A house/flat mate
